Office Memoranda of War Statistics (a series).

This volume contains statistics as to the numbers present for duty, effective, killed, wounded, captured, or missing in various campaigns and battles, and in armies and other commands. The data were compiled from 1896 to 1898 by J.W. Kirkley of the War Records Office from the official records, where they existed, and where such records were incomplete from "the best data obtainable." In the front of the volume is an alphabetical index showing on what pages information concerning the various battles, commands, and so on, is to be found.

By an act of Congress approved June 23, 1874, $15,000 was appropriated "to enable the Secretary of War to begin the publication of the official records of the war of the rebellion, both of the Union and Confederate armies," and the work was assigned to clerks detailed from the Offices of the Secretary of War and The Adjutant General.
